Hi I’m Angela a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate with experience in non-profit work and private practice. I specialize in providing compassionate and effective counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults facing challenges such as trauma, behavioral issues, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and life transitions. I offer a safe, judgment-free environment where clients can express themselves openly and develop coping skills to manage their emotions.

For children and adolescents, I collaborate with both clients and their families to navigate mental health challenges and behavioral concerns in order to create appropriate boundaries, develop communication, and learn parenting skills. I have a strong passion for working with neurodivergent individuals and those on the autism spectrum, assisting them in learning new skills to achieve success.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness practices, and art-based therapies, tailoring my methods to each client's unique needs to promote healing and personal growth.

What to expect for you and your child

Children 10 and under

In our initial appointment, we will conduct an intake session to review practice policies and procedures. Following this, I invite you, the parent, to share in your own words the concerns and challenges your child is facing.

For parents of young children experiencing emotional dysregulation, I will introduce coping strategies such as mindfulness and large-movement activities (bilateral stimulation) to provide immediate support to help with emotional regulation. The remainder of the session, I will focus on building a therapeutic relationship with your child.

Subsequent sessions will be dedicated to working directly with your child, addressing emotional regulation, identifying and reframing negative self-talk associated with low self-esteem, and tackling other specific challenges your child may be encountering.

Research indicates that active parent participation can significantly enhance the effectiveness of therapy for children, leading to faster achievement of treatment goals. Engaging parents in this process creates a consistent environment where therapeutic techniques can be reinforced in daily life. Regular communication through scheduled parent sessions helps foster a partnership in the child's growth and empowers parents with tools to assist their children in navigating challenges. It is also important for children and parents to practice skills at home to facilitate progress outside of the therapy office.

This unified front significantly enhances the child's sense of security and understanding, which is essential for effective therapeutic outcomes. This structured approach ensures both you and your child receive comprehensive support tailored to your family's unique needs. Together, we can work towards providing the best possible support for your child’s journey.

Children 11-17

When working with adolescents, I customize therapeutic techniques to align with each teen's unique level of openness and preferences. Incorporating interactive tools like board games, card games, fidgets, art, and worksheets helps make sessions engaging and relatable. These methods not only facilitate open communication but also aid in explaining complex issues in an accessible manner.

A key focus of our work together includes developing emotional regulation skills and addressing cognitive challenges, particularly reframing negative self-talk. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques are instrumental in this process, as they assist teens in identifying and transforming negative thought patterns into more constructive ones. This approach enhances emotional well-being and fosters healthier coping mechanisms.

Integrating these diverse strategies creates a supportive and effective therapeutic environment, tailored to each adolescent's needs. This promotes their personal growth and emotional resilience, empowering them to face life's challenges with confidence.

Building communication between parents and teens is essential for fostering a supportive environment. Parents play a crucial role in the success of therapy, so I will focus on encouraging open dialogue and facilitating meaningful conversations between both parties.

Regular check-ins can be scheduled to provide updates and identify areas of opportunity for growth and improvement. These meetings can serve as a platform for parents to express their concerns and for teens to share their experiences in a safe space.

Additionally, I encourage all parents to consider engaging in personal therapy. This can help you work through personal stress and offer tools to navigate the complexities of parenting a teenager. By prioritizing your mental health, you can model healthy coping strategies and create a more empathetic connection with your teen. Working together, we can build a stronger relationship that promotes overall well-being for both parents and their children.
