Tiffany Medlin, LPC-Supervisor

Hi, I’m Tiffany, a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. My focus is supporting individuals who are struggling with perfectionism, high stress, and life transitions. In our sessions, I strive to create a nurturing and safe environment that promotes healing and personal growth.

I utilize Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic-based techniques to help my clients navigate the complexities affecting their daily lives. I’m particularly passionate about working with women to break negative patterns and overcome negative self image.

As a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I ensure that my practice is inclusive, allowing clients to explore their identities freely and safely. My goal is to empower individuals to reclaim their lives, overcome limiting beliefs, and achieve personal fulfillment. Together, we will work towards your healing and growth in a supportive and understanding atmosphere.

What to expect in therapy

When scheduling an appointment for yourself, the process is straightforward. Before your first session, you will receive intake forms designed to explain the therapy process and gather essential information about your mental health history, family background, and current life experiences. Additionally, these forms will include assessments to better understand the specific challenges you are facing.

In our first session, we will review all the documents together, during which I will explain confidentiality and the therapeutic process in detail. This is also a time for us to get to know each other better. I will go over the forms you completed and address any questions you might have regarding how I work.

As I primarily utilize EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) in therapy, our following sessions will focus on creating a timeline of your life and identifying key areas you wish to address. We will practice techniques aimed at managing the struggles you've identified, including stress reduction strategies, mindfulness practices, and symptom management techniques. Although EMDR is known for working with trauma, it can also be utilized to help with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and many other struggles you may be facing.

Our pace will be tailored to your comfort level while gently encouraging you to initiate changes in your daily life. At the conclusion of each session, I will prompt you to set small, achievable goals that will guide you toward your broader objectives. These techniques are designed to foster self-confidence and enhance your internal resilience as you progress on your therapeutic journey.

Teens: Getting teens into therapy can be a challenge, but ensuring they feel a sense of independence and a clear understanding of the therapeutic process is essential. Before our first session, I will send out intake forms that include important client history and assessments. It’s vital that teens have the opportunity to provide their input on this history and complete the assessments themselves. This practice not only promotes ownership of their mental health journey but also prevents feelings of being misunderstood.

During the initial session, I will explain the overall process of therapy, discuss confidentiality, and gather basic information with both parents and the teen present. Open communication and a sense of safety are crucial, so I strive to involve the teen in discussions as much as possible. After the initial introduction, I will sit down with the teen for about 30 minutes to facilitate a more personal dialogue before regrouping with the parents to discuss the next steps in therapy. Establishing strong communication between parents and their teen is vital for fostering growth outside of therapy.

Once we have developed a treatment plan, I incorporate a variety of techniques, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), mindfulness practices, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) skills. We will work together to set specific, achievable goals. At the end of each session, I encourage the teen to identify small, actionable goals, promoting resilience and self-empowerment.

Additionally, I strongly recommend that parents consider seeking counseling for themselves. Raising teenagers can be incredibly challenging, and everyone has experiences that shape their parenting. Remember, if a child is struggling, it often reflects the challenges their parents are facing as well. Embracing support for yourself can create a healthier environment for both you and your teen.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a highly structured and systematic method for processing traumatic memories and experiences. Establishing a trustworthy and empathetic therapeutic relationship is absolutely essential, as it creates a safe, judgment-free space where individuals can openly share their personal experiences. The therapist will begin by gathering history and identifying specific distressing events that may have contributed to emotional struggles. After building rapport and establishing trust, the preparation phase begins, during which the therapist thoroughly explains the EMDR process and teaches various grounding techniques that promote a sense of security and stability.

Next, techniques involving bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tactile taps, are introduced to facilitate emotional processing. In the desensitization phase, the client is guided to focus on distressing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, which significantly reduces the emotional intensity associated with those memories.

Following this, the reprocessing phase encourages the client to reflect on these challenging memories, helping them connect them with positive thoughts and effective coping strategies that promote healing. Throughout the entire process, therapists consistently check in, adjusting the techniques as needed to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Progress tracking and celebrating even the smallest achievements serve to build confidence and resilience. Ultimately, EMDR therapy helps confront and address past experiences, develop new and empowering perspectives, and cultivate the resilience necessary to thrive in daily life.
